David Warner, the captain of both Australia and Delhi Capitals (DC), talked about the time one of his tricks failed on Australian great Ricky Ponting. It’s no secret that the explosive southpaw’s pranks on and off the field make him a lot of fun to watch.
David Warner told about a joke he played on Ponting during the 2010 series against South Africa. He put Vaseline on the door handle and jammed the opening so Ponting couldn’t get into his room.
“My first away series was in South Africa in 2010. Ricky Ponting‘s room was next to mine, so I thought it would be funny to put Vaseline on his door handle and vegemite in the gap. From my peephole, I could see that he couldn’t open the door. Warner said on the show “Breakfast with Champions” that someone must have told him it was him.
That was the last time I played a joke on Ricky Ponting.
David Warner also said that his joke went horribly wrong a couple of weeks later when Ponting chose to teach him a lesson.
“When I got back home after three weeks, I didn’t open my cricket kit. When I went to put my shoes on later, I found fish, eggs, and other things. If I had tried to clear this up with customs, I could have been sent to jail. I thought, “Who could do this?” and then I thought of Punter. I told him it was disgusting, but he replied, “You want to trick me?” I’ll be the last one to laugh. “That was the last time I ever played a joke on Ricky Ponting,” he said.
Warner and Ricky Ponting were both part of the Delhi Capitals team, which finished its season with 10 points after 14 games. Because of their terrible performance in the top league, they were the first team to be eliminated from the playoff race.
