Young opener for Gujarat Titans (GT) Shubman Gill reflected on his sensational innings against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2 of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL), which concluded on Friday, May 26 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The 23-year-old scored his third IPL century of the season as GT defeated MI by 62 runs to advance to their second consecutive final. The Hardik Pandya-led squad will now face the four-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday, May 28, in Ahmedabad.
Shubman Gill hit 129 off 60 balls, including seven fours and ten sixes, before Akash Madhwal dispatched him. The youngster rated his third century as his finest IPL innings. With the run, Gill surpassed Faf du Plessis to become the tournament’s leading run scorer and the IPL 2023 Orange Cap leader with 851 runs in 16 innings.
“I believe this was my best innings in the IPL to date,” Shubman Gill said in the post-game presentation.
The cricketer from Punjab also discussed the modifications he has made to his batting technique. He stated that he has shifted tactics since India’s last tour of the West Indies. He added that he sustained an injury prior to the previous IPL season and made some technical adjustments prior to the New Zealand series.
“Since the last West Indies tour, I believe I have stepped up my game. Although I was injured before the last IPL, I have been focusing on my game. After the T20 World Cup, I have focused on a few areas and made technical adjustments in preparation for the New Zealand series,” he said.
Once on the field, it is all about how you can contribute to the team. Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill then discussed how he manages expectations, stating that expectations follow you outside the boundaries, and for him, it’s all about contributing to the team when he’s on the field. In addition, he stated that he prefers playing bat to ball and over and over. Shubman Gill continued by stating that his momentum improved when he struck three sixes in a single over and then realized it might be his day.
“Expectations are something that follow you outside the ropes, but once you’re on the field, it’s all about contributing to the squad. For me, it is an endless game of ball against ball. The over in which I scored three sixes gave me the impetus to score heavily. Then I realized it could be my lucky day,” he continued.
