Meg Lanning, the captain of Australia, has pulled out of the future women’s ashes in 2023 because of health problems. According to coach Shelley Nitschke, this has made the team “a little bit rattled.” The coach doesn’t know what the 31-year-old is going through right now, but she hopes she gets better soon.
Notably, the cricket player took a break from the game in 2022 to work on her mental health. She came back to lead Australia in the T20 World Cup and they won it all. This is a big deal because it’s the second Ashes series that Meg Lanning won’t be able to play in. She missed the 2017–18 series in Australia because of a shoulder issue.
“I’m sure the news scared them a little, but I think Meg Lanning is in our thoughts.
We also know that she wants us to go to that place and finish the job. ESPN cricinfo reported Shelley as saying, “We’ve had some time to sort of wrap our heads around it, and having the girls up here this week is a great way to get them all together.”
In the upcoming game against England, Meg Lanning won’t be there, so Australia‘s opener, Alyssa Healy, will be in charge. Shelley said that Healy did well as captain in India last year, so everyone on the team feels good about her leading the team this year. She also said that the team has a lot of experienced cricket players, so it won’t be hard for them to beat England.
“[Healy] had a big couple of days when she found out she was captaining an Ashes series, but I think she should take a lot of confidence from the fact that she led the team in India last year and did a great job. The girls rallied around her and played some really good cricket, so I think she should feel good about that, and I think she enjoyed it.
“I think our group has some really good leaders. The people in the group have a lot of experience. I think that one thing we’ve gotten good at over the years is being able to change and take things as they come. “I have full faith that our group can go across and hopefully do the job,” she said.
