Colombo, Sri Lanka, 12 June 2023: The Colombo Strikers intend to assemble a formidable squad at the upcoming Lanka Premier League Auction, scheduled for Colombo on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
The Strikers have already signed Pakistan captain Babar Azam, Pakistani speedster Naseem Shah, and Sri Lankan T20 players Mathew Pathirana and Chamika Karunaratne for the 2023 LPL season.
Prior to the auction, Pakistani superstar Babar Azam stated, “The auction is the most crucial aspect of any franchise cricket competition. We’ve discussed the types of athletes we need, and we’ll aim to field the strongest team in the tournament.”
Meanwhile, Simon Helmot, the head coach of the Colombo Strikers, stated, “T20 cricket has evolved and developed over the years. We will attempt to acquire destructive hitters and wicket-taking bowlers. We intend to play an aggressive style of cricket and will need the proper group of players to carry out our strategies.”
Chaminda Vaas, the bowling coach, commented on the team’s strategy for securing a strong bowling unit: “Over the years, we’ve observed that local players make a significant difference in franchise cricket. We have compiled an inventory of names we would like to acquire at the auction. Hopefully, we’ll be able to construct a well-balanced bowling unit at the auction.
Assistant Coach Jerome Jayaratne commented on the dynamics of the auction, stating, “The auction is always difficult. We must maintain our composure. We will establish budgets for each athlete we wish to pursue and adhere to those budgets. We will seek out superstars, but emerging local talent will be our primary focus.”
Sagar Khanna, owner of the Colombo Strikers, also commented on the LPL Auction, stating, “In order to get off to a successful start, we must be competitive in the auction. Our team has a strong group of instructors and analysts, and our franchise is preparing exceptionally well for the auction. We will put our best foot forward and build the strongest team possible.”
In July–August 2023, the Colombo Strikers will compete in their inaugural season of the Lanka Premier League.
