The forthcoming ODI World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to begin on October 5, is expected to feature the hosts India, Australia, and England as the favorites to win. This is according to legendary spinner Muttiah Muralidaran. He continued by saying that any other team may enter the race at any time, spice it up, and possibly take home the coveted cup.
The former cricketer also emphasized the importance of luck in all major competitions. He recalled that New Zealand was the favorite to take home the trophy in the 2019 edition, but luck turned in England‘s favor as the Eoin Morgan-led team went on to win their first-ever ODI World Cup.
“In that case, I’d say the four teams are India, England, Australia, and anybody else.
These three stand a better chance. But you never know since luck is everything in cricket. As we saw in the previous World Cup, we picked New Zealand to win, but luck was on England’s side, and they took home the trophy,” said Muralidaran, as cited by India Today.
The 51-year-old also thinks that teams from the sub-continent will have an edge because they are accustomed to spin-friendly conditions.
The spin-friendly surfaces and the fact that their batters are accustomed to playing spin will undoubtedly give the teams from the subcontinent an advantage.
Muralidaran discusses his upcoming biopic in detail.
The most recent cricketer to have a biopic made was Muralidaran. The Kandy-born cricketer expressed his happiness and excitement about it in a statement and thanked the filmmakers for creating a movie about him. Muralitharan also emphasized that he read the film’s script and checked to make sure that it had just real facts and no masala.
“I’m incredibly thrilled and excited. Many thanks to everybody who helped make it possible. Not to give anything away, but it’s not entirely based on my time playing cricket. It is 80% a human story and 20% a cricket story. It’s about the challenges I’ve encountered in life and how I overcame them,” he continued.
