Cameron Green should start the World Cup’s opening ODI, says Matthew Hayden.

The team will be eager to make some adjustments that could help them regain their form because they are at the bottom of the points table and are struggling to recover their form.

Former Australian hitter Matthew Hayden proposed the modifications. Hayden spoke about a range of subjects, concluding that the Men in Yellow are not benefiting from having Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in the same batting order.

“I don’t believe it does, and I don’t believe they will do anything either. They have a front anchor out and a back anchor out, in my opinion, and the innings don’t progress because they are both firmly stable, according to Hayden, who spoke to ESPNcricinfo.

“It’s fine to have one stabiliser; I think it’s really important to have a mind like Steve Smith at the top of the order when you start to set totals or chase totals; you need that computer mind, but when you have two of them in a row, I think it creates pressure through the top six so I’d make a change there,” he continued.

Hayden also brought up Cameron Green, a talented all-around player. The 51-year-old said that Green might be given a shot as Australia’s opening batter. Hayden argued that allowing Green open could offer the all-rounder the freedom he sorely needed by using the example of his experience with the Mumbai Indians.

‘Give him a license, Cam Green at the top,’ Hayden said. “To me, he’s a youngster who hasn’t necessarily found his tempo in any version of the game, but what we witnessed here during the IPL is that the Mumbai Indians just sent him out and said, kid, just smash it.

He has big levers and excellent scoring skills. Not great at playing spin in the middle, but by that point, if he’s crushed Pakistan for 70 or 80, he’s accomplished his goal,” he continued.
