At Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday, October 27, during Match 26 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, South Africa defeated Pakistan by a single wicket. Pakistan, who had chosen to bat first, was bowled out for 270 in 46.4 overs, while South Africa took just one wicket to complete the chase in 47.2 overs. As Markram fired Haris Rauf’s quick bouncer for a maximum over third man, it turned out to be a candidate for shot of the tournament.

Returning to the game, captain of Pakistan Babar Azam chose to bat first after winning the toss. The opening pair of Abdullah Shafique (9 off 17) and Imam-ul-Haq (12 off 18), who both fell victim to Marco Jansen and left their side on 38/2 after 6.3 overs, did not, however, support his choice.
Shadab Khan (43 off 36) added 84 runs for the sixth wicket off 71 balls to help Pakistan surpass the 220-run mark. Tabraiz Shamsi Saud Shakeel (52 off 52) was able to dismiss Captain Babar (50 off 65) after he continued to hold one end and scored his third half-century of the competition.
South Africa was led home by Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj.
Nevertheless, they were bowled out for 270 in 46.4 overs after failing to bat for the full 50 overs. As a result of cheap dismissals of Quinton de Kock (24 off 14) and Temba Bavuma (28 off 27), South Africa failed to get off to a good start.
With his outstanding knock, Markram kept the innings together, but after being removed in the 41st over, South Africa was left reeling at 250/8, needing another 21 runs to win. The game was won by their side thanks to the contributions of Keshav Maharaj (7* off 21) and Tabraiz Shamsi (4* off 6) who saw their team home in 47.2 overs.
