Prior to the squad retention deadline on Sunday, November 26, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) were notified that star England batsman Joe Root had chosen to withdraw from the IPL 2024. Following his acquisition by RR for INR 1 crore at the 2023 mini-auction, Root made his IPL debut in the 2023 season. The 28-year-old batted just once, scoring 10 runs off of 15 balls, and appeared in just three games for his team.
The director of cricket for the Rajasthan Royals praised Root for his quick turnaround and positive influence on the squad and his colleagues. He went on to say that the team would really miss his enthusiasm and experience.

In our retention discussions, Joe shared with us his desire to skip the 2024 Indian Premier League. Joe was able to have such a tremendous influence on the team and the players surrounding him in such a short amount of time. We will miss his presence within the group and his experience that he provided to the Royals. We fully appreciate his choice and wish him well in all of his endeavors, Sangakkara said.
Joe Root has opted out of IPL 2024.
The dressing room will miss you, Rooty.
