For the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, Steve Smith will wear the Sydney Sixers jersey. He hopes to repeat his incredible season from the previous year in preparation for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Steve Smith was injured during the 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons and did not play for the Sixers again. However, he returned the following season and scored 346 runs in just five innings, including two centuries. Since he began opening innings last season, he has adapted to the position like a duck to water. Actually, in the current T20I series against India, the talismanic bat is opening. Smith discussed how unique it is for him to play for the Moises Henriques-led club. Smith was a member of the Sixers in the inaugural BBL season.
Being back in a Sixers shirt feels fantastic. Playing with the Sixers brought back a lot of very happy memories for me. I’m eager to participate again because, well, I’m an original, was in the first squad, and had a great time during the five or six games and finals I played last year,” Smith told Cricket Australia.
The 34-year-old will play in the Sixers’ inaugural match on Friday, December 8, at the Sydney Cricket Ground against the Melbourne Renegades. Smith will face Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa, two of his longtime friends from Australia, in the high-stakes match.
“I’m quite excited about that. I look forward to facing Adam Zampa with the Renegades; after a terrific World Cup for Australia, he is undoubtedly a top-tier bowler,” Smith stated.
The previous captain of Australia will represent his country in the home Test series against Pakistan following this match. He is anticipated to make a comeback on January 12 for the Sydney Derby.
Steve Smith will always and forever be a Sixer. Moises dos Santos
For the forthcoming BBL season, Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques was overjoyed to have Smith on his team.
“Steve is a true Sixer at heart. We will always seize the chance to include him in this group whenever it arises. He is, without a doubt, one of the greatest players the game has ever seen. Although it goes without saying that you want him on your team, he’s also a great man to be around. For our fans to receive that opportunity this season is a no-brainer for us because he is one of the most entertaining players in the world to watch,” said the seasoned all-rounder.
BBL 13 begins at the Gabba on Thursday, December 7, with the Brisbane Heat hosting the Melbourne Stars.
