The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will see Tamim Iqbal make a competitive return. Following the two-match home Test series against the Kiwis, this decision suggests that the former captain of Bangladesh will not be allowed to participate in the white-ball series in New Zealand.
On November 27, after meeting with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan, he announced the decision during a press conference at his home. The future of the top-order hitter in international cricket was the main topic of discussion. It is noteworthy to add that the 34-year-old chose not to participate in the just-finished ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India, expressing his distaste for BCB’s “dirty game”. This choice was made in the midst of his retirement, comeback, resignation as captain, and alleged rejection of a middle-order position within the team.
“After the World Cup, I thought a choice about my future on the international scene was to be made. I have never let hesitation get in the way of my work. I’ve always been really honest and upfront about every choice I’ve made in my life.
“We needed to meet because I haven’t been in the nation in a while, according to BCB Chief Nazmul Hassan. We had to postpone the meeting yesterday as well, so we held it today. It’s actually not a good idea to do all of this today. Tomorrow is the start of the Test match. I apologize for doing this the day before the game; since we had to hold the meeting today, a statement would undoubtedly be made afterward. Tamim Iqbal told the reporters, “It is crucial for me and the Bangladesh team that this has no effect on the game.
I had made a choice regarding my future: Tamim Iqbal
Tamim went on to say that he had decided on his course of action and had spoken with the head of the Bangladesh Board about it. The 34-year-old disclosed that he was told by the board president to hold off until January and that he intended to start playing cricket again in the BPL.
“I had made a choice regarding my future. Everyone is aware of it. I h and understood. I needed to speak with the representatives of the cricket board. The board president and I had numerous conversations. We h ad a free exchange of ideas. He gave a lot of h information as well. I explained my intentions to him. The board president advised me to hold off until January because the [national legislative] elections are taking up all of his time. I believe I’ll pick up cricket again after the BPL. You will then have a better understanding of what transpired.
“I don’t want to wait a couple more months to resolve things. I do not wish to extend it needlessly. I wish to accept the board’s and the president’s decision to wait until January after much deliberation. I could have explained my strategy to you today, but let me play in the BPL first. After that, we’ll definitely talk again. Additionally, Nazmul stated that he would speak with everyone and make some firm conclusions. I’ll wait for it to occur,” he continued.
