BCB considers apologizing to the national selection panel

On December 31, the terms of Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin and Selector Habibul Bashar will come to an end.

BCB considers apologizing to the national selection panel

Bangladesh has been considering a number of changes to their entire administrative structure ever since their disappointing results at the recent ODI World Cup, which was held in India in October and November of this year. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appears to be concentrating more on altering the selection panel these days. In a similar spirit, two modifications are suggested.

Notably, in addition to Abdur Razzak, one of the selectors on the current national team selection panel is the former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar, with Minhajul Abedin serving as chief selector. Razzak is reportedly going to stay on the selection panel, though. When Sazzad Ahmed left the highly sought-after position in 2021, he took over. Remember that on December 31, both of the former players will have served out their full terms.

In addition, Bashar served with the women’s team before joining the men’s team in the same year that the current chief selector assumed the position in 2016. Furthermore, BCB president Nazmul Hasan made it clear at a recent news conference that these changes are primarily the result of their lengthy tenures in their current roles rather than their performance reviews.

Following that, a number of names—among them the well-known coach Nazmul Abedin—rose to prominence as front-runners for the position of national selector. Nonetheless, a few board insiders think Abedin’s chances of receiving the BCB approval are rather slim. However, the president of BCB does not express any opinions regarding the board members’ present viewpoints.

Reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium were told by Nazmul, “There is nothing like that (selectors will have to be members of the national team),” “I will be busy with my election (parliamentary election) but after the 8th (January), I will return and following my return, there will be a board meeting where we are expecting to make a call on the selectors,” the president of the BCB was cited as saying by Cricbuzz

Given the length of time the selection panel has been in place, the shift is a natural progression. People talk a lot (about the selection panel), but they are unsure of the motivation behind their comments. However, it appears that the national selection panel will be in charge of everything,” he continued.

Former Bangladeshi captain Muhammad Ashraful is interested in the position, but the BCB is opposed.

It’s interesting to note that Mohammad Ashraful, a former star hitter and captain for Bangladesh, was eager to run for the national selector position. When a board member was questioned about his involvement in the selection panel during the press conference, he responded that most of the board members did not want him in the setup because of his tarnished match-fixing history. Furthermore, he mentioned that the majority of the members find his actions even more repugnant than those of Shakib Al Hasan, another former skipper.

In response to a question concerning Ashraful’s goals, the BCB CEO stated that he weighs in with the view that the other board members believe the former player has the right to run, but that a committee would ultimately make the final decision about the selections.

“Names (for the selection panel) will be submitted by the committee we have. They will ascertain who is interested and what their preferences are, and then they will hold a meeting with the board to make our selection. It’s hard to predict who would attend, but if someone wants to, they can show their interest, and that’s fine,” BCB senior brass member Nazmul Hasan stated.
