Cricket Australia has revealed the eleven players that stood out in 2023’s red-ball cricket competition.
The captain of the XI is Pat Cummins, who earlier in June guided Australia to the World Test Championship. Lorcan Tucker, an Irish batter and stumper, has been selected to wear the wicketkeeping gloves in recognition of his exceptional performance in 2023. Stuart Broad, the former England bowler who retired following the Ashes, has also managed to claim a seat.
Regarding the batting lineup, Usman Khawaja and Dimuth Karunaratne, both southpaws, are designated as the opening pair. By the end of 2023, Khawaja’s batting average was 52.60, while Karunaratne had amassed 608 runs at an average of 60.80; therefore, their berths were warranted. Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, has been chosen at number three after his 696 runs in seven games this year.
English batsmen Joe Root and Harry Brook have been dominating the middle order. They have amassed over 1,500 runs between them, including eleven half-centuries and three tons, demonstrating their dedication to England’s Bazball style of play. Lorcan Tucker, an Irish wicketkeeper-batter who played in four games and scored 351 runs at an average of nearly 44, is the next player up.
Indian all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin are in the lower middle order. In the year, Jadeja amassed 281 runs and claimed 33 wickets, while Ashwin claimed 41 wickets at a remarkable average of 17.10. Pat Cummins has put on the captain’s hat. Notably, Cummins’ victory in the WTC Final and the Ashes victory against the Three Lions during his tenure in England will never be forgotten.
elite pacer Kagiso Rabada, who only played in four games in 2023 but left an impression with 20 wickets at an average that was comparable to Ashwin’s, will lead the pace attack. Cricket.com.au also awarded the last slot in the Best XI of 2023 to England’s Broad, who retired from international cricket following the victorious Ashes tour and a strong Test against Ireland in which he took 38 wickets at a pace of 26.28.
Usman Khawaja, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Lorcan Tucker (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Pat Cummins (c), Kagiso Rabada, and Stuart Broad are the members of Cricket Australia’s Best Test XI for 2023.
