'Looking forward' to returning to New Zealand training following an injury layoff, Kane Williamson

With the first Test against South Africa starting on February 4, former New Zealand Test captain Kane Williamson is expected to recover from his recent hamstring injury.

Williamson mentioned his well-progressed hamstring in the last several weeks while expressing his optimistic view on recuperation. He is in high spirits, looking forward to getting back to training and rejoining the team.

“My hamstring is doing great; it has improved over the past few weeks. I’m in good health and am eager to rejoin the team and resume my training. The weather has been amazing. Extremely hot, so yeah, I am confident. As I mentioned, it will just be pleasant to rejoin the team, and I believe that all of the lads are eager to play again as a Test team,” Williamson stated, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Prior to the series, though, New Zealand had its fair share of injury worries. Williamson suffered multiple injuries last year, including a fractured thumb during the ODI World Cup, which kept him from playing a big part in the game. Both wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell and fast bowler Kyle Jamieson have been sidelined with hamstring and back problems, respectively. Jamieson is back playing cricket competitively, but Blundell hasn’t participated in a match in almost a month.

Reassuring everyone about the team’s fitness, Williamson mentioned that he had seen Blundell and Jamieson in the lunchroom and that they appeared to be in good health. He thinks all of them are ready for the next series.

“I saw Blondell and Jamieson in the lunchroom, and they appeared to be in good health based on how they were eating. Naturally, each person’s experience with these injuries varies greatly, and Tom’s hamstring injury took a little longer to heal because a tendon was involved. He seems healthy and ready to go, and Kyle bowled well during his session a few days ago. Everyone is healthy and fit, in my opinion,” he continued.

There have been debates in the cricket fraternity about the eight uncapped players in the South African side for the series. Williamson emphasized that his squad is not taking the opposition lightly in spite of this.

“For us, the only things that matter are the cricket we want to play and our plans, and that remains the same regardless of the opposition. Although the circumstances and other factors have changed, members of our team are probably familiar with several of the South African team’s players from their time playing county cricket and other similar sports. Therefore, we are aware that this will undoubtedly be a difficult competition. They’re all excellent,” he said.

Undoubtedly, there is less information available on some of their players: New Zealand Williamson

Williamson admitted the difficulty of playing against new South African players when questioned about them. He also emphasized the significance of completing homework while keeping their cricket as their main priority.

“There is undoubtedly less information available about some of their players. That presents a problem. Many of the lads know the players quite well, but it’s a new squad, so as I mentioned before, it’s critical that we prepare for every opponent by doing our studies and concentrating entirely on our cricket,” he continued.

Currently ranked third in the World Test Championship standings, New Zealand has never prevailed in a Test series against South Africa. New Zealand Test captain Kane Williamson underlined how important it is to earn points in the championship.

“Winning anywhere is important. That is why trying to micromanage a campaign for a test championship is challenging. It’s important to just try to connect as a group, concentrate on the cricket we want to play that offers us the best chance, and try and do that for extended periods of time since there is a lengthy wait between matches in Test cricket. That will be the series’ main focus, New Zealand Test captain Kane Williamson said.
