Taskin Ahmed is poised to retire from Test cricket due to injury

Taskin Ahmed, the pace spearhead for Bangladesh, is close to retiring from Test cricket as a result of ongoing injury problems, according to information provided to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). During the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, Taskin—who has played in 13 Test matches and taken 30 wickets at an average of 51.50—had a setback due to a shoulder ailment. As a result, he was not present for Bangladesh’s next match against New Zealand.

He made a comeback in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) of 2024 while playing for Durdanto Dhaka. BCB officials agreed with Taskin Ahmed’s request to focus only on white-ball cricket. Before a final decision is made, though, discussions with the player, head coach, and medical personnel are still ongoing. With the hope that his skills would still be able to shine in limited-overs cricket, the 28-year-old’s choice brought attention to the toll that injuries may have on a cricketer’s career.

“Taskin Ahmed had written to say that he was not interested in playing longer-version cricket. We will have a conversation with him about this after the game [of the current BPL] concludes. According to Cricbuzz, BCB Cricket Operation Chairman Jalal Yunus stated, “Let the coach [head coach Chandika Hathurusingha] come and we need to talk with him as well.”

The pending medical findings will determine Taskin Ahmed’s future.

The right-arm bowler has informed head coach Chandika Hathurusingha of Bangladesh that he intends to retire from Test cricket. Hathurusingha has asked if the pacer’s judgment is definitive or subject to change.  In June 2023, the cricket player from Dhaka made his most recent appearance in a Test match against Afghanistan, where he took four wickets in the second innings. Due to the fact that surgery would keep him out of commission for a year, he has decided against having it done.

“Our across-format contracted player is him, Taskin. The chief selector of BCB, Minhajul Abedin, stated, “We need to speak with our physicians and acquire a report on his injury status before we can make a judgment in this regard.
