IPL 2024: Sai Sudharsan explains the Gujarat Titans' run-chase tactic against Sunrisers Hyderabad

After the Gujarat Titans defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the afternoon on Sunday, March 31, in Ahmedabad, by chasing down a 163-run goal, Sai Sudharsan disclosed such tactics.

The Sunrisers sighed and puffed their way to 162/8 in their 20 overs after Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bat first. As he amassed a three-for while giving up just 25 runs in his four overs, Mohit Sharma was Gujarat’s best bowler. Wriddhiman Saha responded by hitting a 13-ball 25 to get the Titans off to a fast start. Before David Miller and Sai Sudharsan combined for 64 runs to put their team in a dominant position, Gujarat captain Shubman Gill also contributed a useful 36 off 28 balls.

\With five balls remaining, Miller and Vijay Shankar pushed the Titans to victory with seven wickets, after Sudharsan eventually left the game after scoring 45 runs off of 36 balls while hitting four fours and one six. Following the game, the gifted young player reported that batting on the pitch was challenging at first but that, in the second inning, it got a little easier under the lights. In order to take the game to the next level, the southpaw explained that the plan was to attack the appropriate bowlers and hold wickets.

Taking Mayank Markhande for 24 runs, Sudharsan and Miller dismissed him in the 16th over. It was always their intention to go for the spinner’s over, the 22-year-old disclosed.

To bat on, it was undoubtedly a challenging wicket, with little room to pursue every bowler in each over. With wickets in hand, it’s all about selecting the most effective bowler and extending the game. Whatever the circumstance, we must undoubtedly step up when the squad needs to increase its run rate. Today, however, the circumstances and the wicket were distinct.

According to Cricbuzz, Sai Sudharsan stated, “I thought that taking the game deep and having wickets in hand benefited us today.

In the presence of lighting, the wicket became considerably simpler. Because the run rate was increasing, we also adjusted the momentum. As we became more adept at playing against spinners, we were also better at targeting them. “We were anticipating that one successful spin, and we are extremely appreciative that we made the deliberate choice to remove the spinner,” he remarked.

It proved to be a fruitless risk to bowl Mayank Markande in the 16th over: Muttiah Muralitharan

Gujarat was just three down in the 16th over when Sunrisers Hyderabad’s spin-bowling coach, Muttiah Muralitharan, explained that they had attempted to hunt for wickets by using Markande.

There was some spin, but the wicket was a touch low and sluggish. We were ten or fifteen runs away from our target of 180–170. We were unable to capitalise on their excellent bowling. One can manage a total of 160. Up until the fifteenth over, we were in the match. We were forced to gamble in the sixteenth over, as they had only lost three wickets. We chose to bowl Mayank against two left-handers in that over. In that over, we anticipated that they would exert a lot of effort, and if they mistimed, we could take a wicket. According to Muralitharan, it was unsuccessful.

The Gujarat bowlers held Sunrisers to a respectable score on the challenging surface, and Sudharsan was full of praise for their comeback in the final five overs. Surprisingly, he also disclosed the conversation that occurred during the team’s time out, which supported their efforts to turn the tide of the match.

They were gaining a lot of ground in the powerplay and had excellent momentum. Everyone thought the score might reach 170-180, but we managed to take wickets when it mattered most, and our bowlers produced some tremendous last five overs. Because they were about 10–12 runs ahead of our estimate, we had a discussion during the timeout about bringing the team back,” Sai Sudharsan stated.

Additionally, Muttiah Muralitharan admitted that Mohit made his batters’ lives difficult. In the next game, the veteran hoped that the club would correct their faults and get back to winning ways, commending them for their hard work.

“Our batsmen found it tough to hit against Mohit’s bowling. Our bowlers appeared to have made adjustments as well. It was a really enjoyable game. It’s unrealistic to anticipate victory in every match. Our guys made a great effort. Small errors will occur. So that we can build winning momentum in the following game, we must ensure that we don’t do it, Muttiah Muralitharan stated.
