Interestingly, Mitchell Marsh took over as captain ahead of the major tournament when Pat Cummins resigned due to a lack of leadership experience. Conversely, Cummins might have scored a hat-trick and guided Australia to victory in the 2023 World Test Championship Final and ODI World Cup, but the pacer unexpectedly expressed a desire to stand away while captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.
In an exclusive interview with CricTracker, former cricket player Brett Lee declined to comment on the Australian team’s recent leadership transition, citing lack of knowledge of the procedure. The seasoned bowler, though, supported Marsh as the team’s captain and noted that a leader cannot always win games by themselves. The Allan Border Medal was won by the 32-year-old all-rounder thanks to an impressive season at bat, but he fell short at the T20 World Cup.
Lee continued by saying he could see Cummins’ desire to take a vacation from captaincy given how difficult the position is. Although Lee isn’t sure why, he supported Cummins’ desire to lead a top-tier team in all three formats, which is hard.
I’m not in that inner sanctum, so it’s really difficult for me to remark on that. Pat Cummings didn’t want to captain the T20 World Cup, but I’m not sure if that was the call. I’m not sure if they intended to pursue a different route, bring in a younger player to Mitchell Marsh, or relieve Pat Cummins of some of his workload; it’s difficult to guess,” Lee stated to cricketmood.
However, all I am aware of is that you must fully support the captain you choose. He is making every effort possible. Not every game can be won by the captain. And in my opinion, Pat Cummins has done an excellent job both as a leader and as a captain when he has achieved the kind of success he has. Perhaps he was looking for some time off. But like I said, that’s simply pure conjecture. The speedster said, “I don’t know anything else.”
