The IPL and the ILT20 coming in second and third, respectively, the richest leagues globally are the Big Bash League and the SA20 These competitions ensure that cricket is the talk of the town all year long.

Players are gravitating towards the lucrative T20 franchise leagues, which are springing up all over the world, to the point where some are even forgoing playing international cricket. One such player who has left the Test and ODI cricket arenas early is Quinton de Kock, who is currently active in T20Is and franchise leagues. In an exclusive interview with CricTracker, former Australian cricketers Tim Paine and Shaun Marsh shared their thoughts on the trend of these players gravitating towards these leagues.

Perhaps we should prioritise the truly excellent leagues, like the IPL, and sanction less of these lesser ones. Paine stated, “The ICC can somehow sort it out and sanction what’s relevant and what’s not.

Marsh emphasised the need to safeguard Test cricket while echoing similar sentiments. He expressed his satisfaction at the abundance of opportunities available to today’s cricketers to pursue their craft even when they are not participating in international competitions.

“I believe that every cricket player should prioritise the protection of Test cricket and the well-being of the format, provided that the ICC upholds this principle. However, I really appreciate that players now have a tonne of options. T20 cricket didn’t exist when I started playing, and if you weren’t playing international cricket, there wasn’t a whole lot of cricket. Thus, it’s great that players have as many options as they have,” Marsh said.
