After defeating the West Indies by an innings and 114 runs at Lord’s in the opening Test of the series, James Anderson hung up his boots. In the second innings, the renowned pacer claimed three wickets and nearly claimed another, but he was unable to seize it. Anderson’s international career came to an abrupt end when debutant Gus Atkinson sent Jayden Seales packing shortly after.
Anderson was trying very hard to get a wicket and say goodbye to international cricket when Atkinson dismissed him, according to England captain Ben Stokes. Stokes clarified, though, that the 41-year-old was chuckling, giving Atkinson credit, and delighted to defeat a young cricket player in his last farewell game.
“Gus apologised to Jimmy after taking the final wicket, but Jimmy simply laughed and said, ‘No, mate.'” To put a young colleague ahead of yourself, I think that says a lot about Jimmy Anderson as a guy. You know someone who earned their fairytale ending like Broady (Stuart Broad) had,” Stokes told BBC Cricket.

Gus Atkinson, on the other hand, made an amazing debut with the ball. The 26-year-old was declared Player of the Match after taking 12 wickets.

For the remainder of the summer, Anderson will continue to play for the England squad, he also revealed. Although the pacer has not yet signed the paperwork, ECB Director of Cricket Rob Key extended an invitation to take on the mentorship. He will wait and see how things work out before making any decisions about the future.

“I really haven’t given it much thought.” I plan to stay with these men for the remainder of the summer, try to lend a helping hand to the bowling club as much as I can, and then see where life takes us. Anderson remarked, “I haven’t looked that far ahead.
