Aakash Chopra, a former cricket player for India, has questioned if Cheteshwar Pujara or Ajinkya Rahane should rejoin the Indian team for the England tour. The former opener noted that Rohit Shamra and Virat Kohli will not be travelling with the Indian side.
The first match of India’s five-match Test series against England is scheduled to begin on June 20 at Leeds. India’s first series of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle 2025–2027 will feature an inexperienced batting lineup as the two veterans have declared their retirement from the red-ball game.
Whether Rahane or Pujara should be selected for the England series was of interest to the 47-year-old. Chopra said that the two might be considered to help the squad because of their English-language experience.
“There was another discussion that if Virat Kohli is not going, although it’s been heard that someone is trying to convince him, can Ajinkya Rahane or Cheteshwar Pujara return, just for this series?” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
“Is that a way the team can go? Are they able to think that way? Since it’s the England tour, I’m voicing it. I would have suggested that we take the kids along if it had been any other trip. But if neither Rohit nor Kohli are there, you could want to consider Rahane or Pujara. Both are scoring runs and playing well,” Chopra acknowledged.
The elderly will not have a place: Aakash Chopra.
Since the Indian system already has enough possibilities to show off in the series, the cricketer from Agra suggested that there might not be a spot for the older players. He said he has concerns about the selectors getting in the middle of the batters’ selection.
Since the Indian squad possesses KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal for opening, I seriously doubt that they will go in that approach. He stated, “Shubman Gill might arrive at number four because he might eventually like that number.”
“Shubman Gill could be at number four, Sai Sudharsan at number three, and (possible) vice captain Rishabh Pant at number five.” You may want to retain one of Sarfaraz Khan, Karun Nair, and Nitish Kumar Reddy at number six. There will not be a place if you begin to think that way. “I think the Indian team might want to take that route,” he said in closing.
