Following the news of Sri Lanka’s ace spinner Wanindu Hasaranga’s retirement from Test play, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra is perplexed. Notably, the spinner decided to end the game’s longest format, notifying Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) of his choice on August 15.
Wanindu Hasaranga made his format debut in 2020, going up against South Africa in Centurion. He played in just four games, taking four wickets. While the top spinner has made significant progress in white-ball cricket, he was unable to match those achievements in the longest format.
The choice was made by Wanindu Hasaranga to concentrate more on franchise cricket tournaments. While there have been conflicting reactions to the decision, former cricketer turned broadcaster Aakash Chopra voiced his displeasure that players choose to play franchise cricket as opposed to the longest format.
“Wanindu Hasaranga has stated he does not wish to participate in Test cricket. Despite only being 26 years old, he has abandoned Test cricket. Why are you doing this? Is that correct or incorrect? Alex Hales and Trent Boult are still without a contract.
What is going on with cricket globally? Aakash Chopra made the observation on his YouTube channel.
He is an excellent player in T20 cricket, without a doubt. Although he has stated that he does not want to play Test cricket and instead wants to concentrate on white-ball cricket, it would not be incorrect to suggest that he is Sri Lanka’s top player in that format.
Players are choosing to participate in these events over Test cricket now that the new leagues are gaining center stage because they offer more lucrative offers. In the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023, the top spinner is presently playing for B-Love Kandy.
After the LPL 2023 is over and the August 30 start date of the Asia Cup 2023 has been set, Hasaranga will join the national squad. At the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on August 31, Sri Lanka will play their opening match against Bangladesh.
