Abhishek Sharma scored 148 runs off only 52 balls against Bengal’s formidable bowling attack at the Gymkhana Ground in Hyderabad on Sunday, November 30.
Choosing to bat first, the Punjab captain struck the ground running, reaching his half-century in just 12 balls. He struck five fours and as many sixes to reach the milestone. However, he wasn’t satisfied with just setting his team off to a fast start; he went on to score his seventh century in the shortest format. Abhishek took only 32 balls to reach three figures.
Abhishek Sharma now trails just Virat Kohli in terms of the most T20 centuries by an Indian batter.
The former India captain has nine hundred from 397 innings, while Abhishek scored his eighth in just 157.
Even after scoring a mind-boggling century, Abhishek resumed his onslaught as the Bengal bowlers were unable to recover. Akash Deep ultimately dismissed him in the 18th over. During his incredible knock, the 25-year-old scored 148 off only 52 balls. He hit eight fours and sixteen sixes at a remarkable strike rate of 284.62.
It was an outstanding performance from Abhishek, especially given the calibre of the opposition bowling attack. Aside from Deep, the lineup featured international bowlers Mohammed Shami and Shahbaz Ahmed. But none of them was spared.
Apart from Abhishek, Prabhsimran Singh (70 off 35), Ramandeep Singh (39 off 15), and Sanvir Singh (22 off 8) all had outstanding performances as Punjab finished on 310/5 in 20 overs. Punjab delivered a statement performance after losing their previous encounter to Haryana in the Super Over.
Bengal, who have won both games they have played so far, will have their task cut out when they walk out to bat in the second innings.
