Afghanistan made history by winning the Emerging Asia Cup 2024 with a seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. A triumph over India in the semi-finals was part of the outstanding performance for the team captained by Darwish Rasooli. At the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman, they won the championship despite losing to Hong Kong in the group stage thanks to some intense cricket play.
Sri Lanka put 133 runs on the board after batting first.
Their top order fell apart, and at one point they were down to 15/4, with all four of their top hitters scoring in single figures. The ship was later taken over by Pawan Rathnayake and Sahan Arachchige, who assisted Sri Lanka in posting a respectable score.
With six fours, Arachchige scored an undefeated 64 off 47. Nimesh Vimukthi scored 23 off 19 towards the close of the innings, while Pawan, who scored 20 off 21, briefly supported him. The youthful Allah Ghazanfar had an amazing performance for Afghanistan, taking two wickets for just 14 runs in his four overs. Together with Ghazanfar, pacer Bilal Sami opened the bowling and the two took five wickets, with the former taking a three-for, which included the wickets of the Sri Lankan openers.
In the chase, Sri Lanka got off to a great start by dismissing opener Zubaid Akbari on the first ball. The other opener, Sediqullah Atal, on the other hand, maintained his excellent form by giving his team a substantial undefeated 55 off as many balls.
