In the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the legendary captain of the Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni, will captain his side for the fifteenth season. It’s worth noting that, after leading CSK to five titles, Dhoni is now tied for the most successful captain in IPL history. There have been many discussions about Dhoni’s retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) since he said goodbye to international cricket in 2020.
But the 42-year-old has persevered year after year, leading his team to championship wins in 2021 and 2023. The wicketkeeper-batter is anticipated to hang up his boots for good in the forthcoming season, and rumors about CSK’s next captain have started to circulate. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan recently revealed the team’s plans for Dhoni’s replacement. According to Viswanath, CSK owner N. Srinivasan has delegated the responsibility of selecting Dhoni’s successor as captain to the team’s coach and captain.
“Srinivasan has been extremely explicit about this in internal meetings. The selection of the captain and vice captain should be avoided. We’ll let the coach and the captain make that determination. “The coach and the captain will decide and give us a directive; till then, let’s all keep quiet,” stated Viswanathan during a YouTube interview with S. Badrinath.
Speaking further in advance of each season, Viswanathan disclosed Dhoni’s objectives and said that the captain’s main priority is always winning league games.
“MS Dhoni often advises us to focus on league games first before the season starts. “We intend to aim for knockout status,” Viswanathan continued.
In 2023, MS Dhoni recorded his highest season strike rate ever.
Notably, in recognition of the love he had received from Indians all during the season, Dhoni promised his supporters at the post-match presentation of the previous year’s championship that he would play again the next year. With a strike rate of 182.46, the wicketkeeper batsman demonstrated his vintage best batting at his best ever in a single season while battling through a knee injury during the 2023 edition. The batsman, who was born in Ranchi, is keen to have a fantastic season to round off his career in style, both as a batter and as captain.
