South Africa’s Aiden Markram and West Indies captain Hayley Matthews have been named the ICC Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month for June 2025.
Markram won the men’s award over teammate Kagiso Rabada and Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka for his Player of the Match performance in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia at Lord’s.
The 30-year-old opener scored 136 off 207 balls and had a 147-run third wicket stand with captain Temba Bavuma in the successful pursuit of 282. The five-wicket victory gave South Africa its first ICC title since the Champions Trophy in 1998. Markram also took one wicket apiece in the two innings.
Matthews, who previously won the accolades in November 2021, October 2023, and April 2024, defeated South Africa’s Tazmin Brits and compatriot Afy Fletcher to become only the second player to win the trophy four times, following Australia all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner.
The West Indies skipper scored 104 runs in three one-day internationals against South Africa, including a half-century in the third match. She also took four wickets during the series. Her impressive form continued in the succeeding 2-1 T20I series victory. She was selected Player of the Series for her two fifties totalling 147 runs and two wickets.
Aiden Markram stated, “It is a privilege to get this prize.
Contributing to our team’s and South Africa’s victory in the ICC World Test Championship is really rewarding for me.
“Winning the final at Lord’s is a momentous occasion in South African cricket, one that we will all remember forever. This triumph was only possible because of the entire team’s efforts, with significant contributions from KG (Kagiso Rabada) and Tembs (Temba Bavuma).”
Matthews stated, “It’s an honour to get the Player of the Month title again. I’ve been satisfied with my recent form, but most importantly, it’s been terrific to contribute to the team’s win, particularly in a hard-fought T20I series against South Africa.
“Recognition like this is great, but my emphasis is on what lies ahead. There’s so much more I want to do, both personally and with this team. We’re on the right track, and I’m optimistic about where we may go from here.”
