Ajinkya Rahane praised Shubman Gill’s performance with the bat in the recently ended England-India Test. Rahane praised Gill’s intent and spirit throughout his impressive efforts of 269 and 161 in India’s first and second innings, respectively.
Rahane praised Gill’s comeback after losing by five wickets in the series opener at Headingley. He shared his thoughts in a little video on X. The cricket community has expressed similar feelings to the 37-year-old in the comments section, praising the Baggy Blues’ blitz under the leadership of their new captain.

Gill’s knocks ensured that India scored competitive totals in both innings. More than 40% (42.41%) of the runs were scored by the red-ball captain. The two knocks combined for 43 fours and 11 sixes. With this, Gill broke several records and joined an elite group of Test cricketers. It was also India’s first time scoring more than 1,000 runs (1,014 – 687 in the first; 427 in the second) in total across both innings.
However, it wasn’t simply Gill who attended the celebration; Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep also played well. Siraj and Deep took six and four wickets, respectively, in England’s first innings, giving their team a significant 180-run advantage. Deep finished the game with career-high match Test numbers of 10/187, the best by an Indian against England in England.
The two sides will now square off at Lord’s with the series poised at one apiece. Gill & Co. would be aiming on capitalising on their momentum and transferring it forward into the third match. On the other hand, England would be keen on enhancing their performance and deliver a better showing with bat and ball at the Home of Cricket. The match is scheduled to get underway on Thursday, July 10.
