The decision by Mahendra Singh Dhoni to introduce Ajinkya Rahane against the Mumbai Indians paid off, as the veteran cricketer displayed class and played brilliantly to help the Chennai Super Kings win their second match of the IPL 2023. In pursuit of 158 runs, the four-time champions lost to Devon Conway in the first over of the second inning and were in trouble, but Rahane changed the complexion of the game.
In his debut match for the Chennai franchise in the 2023 edition, the cricketer scored 61 runs off just 27 deliveries, bringing the MS Dhoni-led team closer to victory. Ruturaj Gaikwad supported him well from the other end, as Chennai ultimately defeated Mumbai by seven wickets at the historic Wankhede Stadium.
While speaking about Ajinkya Rahane, Dhoni revealed the conversation he had with his erstwhile national team assistant.
The 41-year-old stated that he instructed the cricketer born in Maharashtra to perform to his strengths and avoid stress throughout the season, as the team management will support him.
“At the beginning of the season, I advised Jinks Ajinkya Rahane to play to his talents and utilize his ability to manipulate the field. I told him to enjoy himself, not to worry, and that we would support him. He batted well and was dissatisfied with how he was eliminated; that says it all. Dhoni stated at the post-match press conference, “I believe every game is crucial, and you should focus on the problems at hand and take things one step at a time, rather than the standings.”
With two consecutive victories, the Chennai Super Kings have moved up to fourth place in the IPL Points Table. Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali’s fitness is still questionable prior to their match against the Rajasthan Royals, so there are some concerns. Even though it is anticipated that they will recuperate in time for the upcoming games, there is currently no confirmation.
