"Would you prefer that I retire?" - Former Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi lashes out at reporters in an attempt to qualify for the upcoming T20 World Cup

Mohammad Nabi a former captain and original member of the Afghanistan cricket team, has set the lofty objective of playing for his country in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Fascinatingly, the rugged all-rounder is leading the Dambulla Sixers in Sri Lanka, where, after a two-year absence, India will co-host the premier ICC event.

As a result, the seasoned Afghani has set his sights on qualifying for yet another World Cup—if the national selectors give him another chance—and is currently not planning to retire. As a result, Nabi retaliated quickly when a journalist inquired about his future intentions by questioning whether he ought to retire given that he is in such excellent physical condition.

“Do you want me to retire?” Rain played possums on Friday, disrupting his team’s practice session, so Nabi shot back at a journalist at the famed Premadasa Stadium.

For what length of time do I wish to play cricket? My body continues to function while I run quickly. I’m bowling good and fielding in the boundary well, grabbing catches. Cricbuzz cited him as stating, “Even so, I’m doing well and I’m trying to keep myself (fit) for as long as possible.”

Mohammad Nabi also disclosed that the forthcoming Champions Trophy will be his final in the 50-over format, potentially advancing his case by a year or two. Additionally, he revealed his key to playing long in international cricket. Notably, the tenacious spinner has been a member of the energetic Afghan team since 2008. He attributes the length of his cricketing days to a rigorous nutrition plan. He remains optimistic that he will be able to participate in the 2026 T20 World Cup as a result.

“Afghanistan team needs me as well at this stage but still may be Champions Trophy will be my last Champions Trophy in 50-over( format) and after that maybe one year and that’s it,” the experienced offspinner went on to say.

“At forty years old, I’m not a young man. It all depends on what you eat and how you consume it, but I still do my best to work out hard and recuperate as soon as I can. How you consume healthful, clean meals to increase your fitness level,” Nabi said.

In addition, Nabi discussed how Afghanistan fared in the just finished T20 World Cup 2024. As they advanced to the semifinals for the first time, the all-around player thinks the squad performed exceptionally well and that this was a positive indicator for the future. Additionally, Afghanistan defeated formidable opponents, demonstrating the value of each player’s effort.

“The Afghan T20 team performed incredibly well in the World Cup. We won the event against strong teams. Yes, that was a huge accomplishment in my cricket career to make it to the semi-finals and the tough four for the first time. Hopefully, there will be more to come. We played and performed well as a team in the World Cup, and everyone made a significant contribution,” Nabi said.
