Earlier in the day on the first day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Australian rookie Sam Konstas and Virat Kohli got into a mid-pitch fight.
The incident happened during the first play session when Konstas and Kohli bumped shoulders after the latter’s aggressive style had irritated the Indian bowling attack. Usman Khawaja and Konstas opened the batting and had easily defeated the Indian speed attack.
However, Kohli purposefully stepped across Konstas’ path at the conclusion of the tenth over, which prompted a verbal disagreement between the two players. The altercation attracted a lot of attention, but Khawaja and umpire Michael Gough stepped in to defuse the situation.
It is probable that the incident will be investigated by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The captain of the women’s squad for Australia, Alyssa Healy, expressed her displeasure at Kohli’s actions, saying they were unworthy of a player of his height.
It’s a difficult one. Perhaps more disheartening than anything else is the fact that your seasoned player, who is also among your finest players in the nation, is clearly considering the big picture and went straight for the opposition’s youngest player. It doesn’t exactly convey your side in the best possible way. However, it’s okay if that’s the Indian team’s preferred method. However, that didn’t faze him in the least,” Alyssa Healy stated on Fox Cricket.
Virat Kohli may have a few enquiries to address: Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting, a former Australian captain, too blamed Kohli for starting the fight, saying that the star batsman intentionally started it. Before losing to Ravindra Jadeja, Konstas scored a gutsy fifty on debut, demonstrating incredible calmness despite the hot situation.
“Observe the path Virat takes. That altercation was started by Virat, who walked a full pitch to his right. I have no doubts whatsoever. I thought Konstas looked up really late and didn’t even realise there was someone in front of him. “I think Kohli, the man on screen there, may have some questions to answer,” Ponting stated live (via 7Cricket).
