One of the main causes of the attention being drawn to the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is the untimely dismissal of legendary all-rounder Angelo Mathews. On Monday, November 6, the 38th match of the tournament pitted Bangladesh against Sri Lanka. Angelo Mathews was ready to take the strike in the middle order when Sri Lanka batted first, but after Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for the same, the veteran batter went beyond the time restriction and was dismissed without even facing a delivery.
Speaking on the episode, Mathews stated that, in his professional experience, he had never seen a team go so low. He continued by saying it was a disgrace to Bangladesh and its captain, Shakib Al Hasan.
It was blatantly shameful of Bangladesh and Shakib. In the press conference following the game, Angelo Mathews stated, “There’s something seriously wrong, seriously, if they want to take wickets like that and stoop down to that level.”
“Bangladesh’s performance was really unsatisfactory. There would be no problem if it was mankading or blocking the field. I reached the crease in less than two minutes, and that’s when my helmet shattered. The referees noticed this. There were five seconds left. The umpires informed me that Bangladesh had appealed after I displayed my helmet. Since I still had two minutes left, I wondered where common sense was,” he said.
