As only the tenth women’s player to record a double century in Test cricket, Annabel Sutherland achieved unprecedented heights and cemented her place in history. The magnificent event was held at Perth’s famous WACA stadium. In a special Test match against a struggling South African side, Sutherland displayed a masterclass in batting.
Sutherland played a brilliant performance on the second day of the match, using a variety of strokes to captivate the crowd and control the opposition’s bowling attack. Resuming her innings unbeaten at 54, she did not lose any time in overwhelming the bowlers and quickly reached her second Test century with a barrage of boundaries.
Sutherland did, however, get her moment of glory in the last over before Tea, hitting the much-coveted 210 runs. She was one run shy of breaking Ellyse Perry’s record, which stood at 213. Sutherland’s innings were outstanding, even though he was unable to change the history books.
Record-breaking Annabel Sutherland makes her mark
The 22-year-old prodigy broke Karen Rolton’s previous record for the fastest double ton with her century, which came off just 248 deliveries. As the WACA audience cheered her on, Sutherland accepted her accomplishment with grace.
Sutherland’s all-around performance had a lasting effect in addition to her on-field brilliance. She demonstrated her bowling prowess earlier in the game, taking three vital wickets for just 19 runs, and she was instrumental in limiting South Africa to their lowest Test score of 76.
She is the fifth Australian woman to score a double hundred in a Test match with this record. Ellyse Perry, Joanne Broadbent, Michelle Goszko, and Karen Rolton are the other batters who have accomplished the feat in addition to her.
