In the current Women’s T20 World Cup, Asha Sobhana was selected for India’s playing XI for their intense match against Australia. However, the 33-year-old spinner was unable to compete because she hurt her knee during practice. It’s interesting to note that at the toss, Australia’s stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath had already received the team list from captain Harmanpreet Kaur. This prompted the match referee to step in and speak with both leaders about the circumstances surrounding Sobhana’s injury.
Notably, Asha Sobhana was taken for a medical evaluation shortly after the injury, and the cricket player did not even attend the playing of the national anthem.
The Indian team was able to designate Radha Yadav as Asha Sobhana’s replacement in the starting lineup because McGrath, who took Alyssa Healy’s place as captain when he was injured, did not object. Such actions are permitted by ICC law, but only under certain restrictions, such the opponent captain’s consent.
“On the team sheet supplied by the ICC, each captain must submit a written nomination for 11 players plus a maximum of four substitute fielders. No player (member of the playing eleven) may be substituted after nomination and before play begins without the opposing captain’s approval, according to ICC’s Playing Conditions section 1.2.1, with the exception of what is specified in clause 1.2.7 [concerning concussion substitutes].

Despite taking two vital wickets during the powerplay, India’s Renuka Singh Yadav was unable to stop Australia’s momentum.
