Australia finished the Ashes 2025-26 on a high note, winning the fifth Test at Sydney Cricket Ground by five wickets to demonstrate their superiority at home, despite England momentarily threatening to regain momentum through sheer resilience. The triumph also meant that Australia finished out the series with authority, putting to rest any misgivings raised by their Boxing Day defeat.
England started the Test on a strong note, scoring 384 in their first innings after deciding to bat. Joe Root, the talisman, led the way by gliding to his first red-ball century in Australia, smashing a magnificent 160 off 242 balls while combining patience and technique. Harry Brook’s smooth 84 generated impetus throughout the middle session, while Jamie Smith chipped in with a vital 46 lower down but eventually holing out to Boland.
Despite this, Australia’s bowlers never completely lost control.
Michael Neser was the highlight of the bowlers, taking four wickets, while Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland struck at critical periods to keep England from running away altogether.
Australia’s answer was unequivocal. Travis Head once again dominated the Ashes story, slamming a dominating 163 to set the tone early. Steven Smith followed with a characteristically assured 138, and together they thwarted England’s bowling plans throughout a lengthy, exhausting innings.
Beau Webster, Cameron Green, and Marnus Labuschangne contributed to Australia’s massive reply of 567 in their first innings, giving the hosts a commanding advantage that effectively dictated the game. Meanwhile, Josh Tongue was the visitors’ best bowler, taking three wickets, although support was spotty.
The match progressed swiftly towards the end. In the second innings, the Englishmen fought valiantly against a formidable opponent. Jacob Bethell scored a career-defining 154 from 265 balls, while Duckett and Brook made quick cameos.
However, Starc and Webster struck early, and Webster’s bowling spin took advantage of a used-up pitch, which worked very well for the hosts. Boland pressed hard, and England were bowled out for 342, giving the Australians with a reasonable chase.
The goal was never really in doubt. Despite the Ben Stokes-led side taking five wickets to put some pressure on the goal, the Aussies strolled to win at 161-5, securing the match and reinforcing their dominance at home.
