In the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25, Australia accomplished a historic victory over the Indian squad. After ten years, Australia regained the trophy with a 3-1 series victory under Pat Cummins‘ leadership.
Notably, the Australians advanced to the World Test Championship final as a result of their series victory. In addition, the victory puts Australia in second place in the WTC rankings. With a 50.00 win % following the defeat in Sydney, the Indian squad is now ranked third in the standings and might fall to fourth if Sri Lanka defeats Australia 2-0 in their next series.
The recently finished series was difficult for the Indian team. The team won in Perth to start the series. Following their easy victory in the first Test, things appeared to be improving. However, following the first Test, things became worse.
Australia won the second Test match of the series in Adelaide, and they also won the final two series matches in Melbourne and Sydney after the match in Brisbane ended in a draw. It is important to remember that India controlled the BGT for a number of years, and Australia’s series victory signalled the end of the Indian team’s ten-year domination.
Later this year, Australia will play South Africa in the WTC final. South Africa was in first place in the WTC rankings and had already advanced to the final.
