Ayush Mhatre, 17, became the youngest player to make his debut for the five-time champion Chennai Super Kings when they awarded him his first cap against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, one day after 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi of the Rajasthan Royals made an incredible debut. Ashwani Kumar, the pacer for MI, was dismissed by the Mumbai-born hitter for eighteen runs in a single over.
Due to an elbow injury that kept regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad out of the game, CSK gave the cap to Mhatre following his outstanding performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, in which he made 458 runs at an average of 65.42. Following the early loss of Rachin Ravindra, CSK needed to steady the innings when he got to the crease.
Following a single off his opening delivery, Ayush Mhatre pounded Ashwani’s over.
He hit his first IPL boundary with a direct hit of mid-off. Flicking over deep midwicket for six after it. A little while later, he hit another six with a short ball over square leg.

In the next overs, he faced Deepak Chahar. Mhatre gave him three bounds with a slap. Chahar, however, got his retribution in the seventh over. A short ball he bowled bounced awkwardly off Mhatre, who attempted the pull but was unable to control it. At long-on, Mitchell Santner caught the ball safely.
Mhatre returned to a standing ovation after scoring 32 runs at a strike rate of 213.33 off just 15 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes. Back at the pavilion, Suryakumar Yadav gave him a pat on the back as well. At the crease with Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja, the CSK scorecard stood at 66/2 after nine overs.
