Babar Azam has been having a lot of trouble lately, and the PSL 2025 game between Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi was no exception. On Saturday, April 19, Babar left the game at Rawalpindi after just a few runs, demonstrating his lack of effort once more.
In the match that had to be won, Peshawar batted first and were already in trouble when opener Saim Ayub left after scoring a few runs in the second over. The ship sank further when Babar left after only six balls after failing to read a straight delivery from David Willey, despite the fans’ expectations that he would take charge and steady the ship. Without hesitation, the umpire gave the finger, forcing the captain to retreat.

Babar has only managed three runs from as many games after yet another lacklustre batting performance. He scored a single in the second game, a two-ball duck in the first, and a few more runs in the match against the Sultans. He is regarded by both fans and professionals as the best Pakistani batter of the current age, therefore these statistics are extremely alarming for someone of his calibre.
Like Babar, the Peshawar team isn’t enjoying his leadership either. They were able to defeat the Sultans, nevertheless, who are currently the only team in the league’s tenth edition without a victory. With significant batting contributions from Tom Kohler-Cadmore (52 off 30), Mohammad Haris (45 off 21), Mitchell Owen (34 off 15), and Abdul Samad (40 off 14), the team scored 227 runs. Additionally, the bowlers performed their duties well, dismissing the previous season’s finalists for a mere 107 runs, allowing Babar & Co. to triumph by 120 runs.
Peshawar hopes Babar Azam will return.
In the last three seasons of the competition, the Peshawar Zalmi had advanced to the PSL playoffs. In the two previous editions, their 30-year-old batter was likewise one of the team’s top run producers. Last season, Babar averaged 56.90 runs per game and scored 569 runs, making him the tournament’s leading run scorer.
Having scored five half-centuries and one hundred that season, the Lahore native’s club finished third after losing to eventual champions Islamabad United in the second eliminator. His strike rate that season was 142.60. To have a better chance of winning, the Zalmi would need to hope that the star batsman will resume his previous level of performance.
