Julian Wood, a prominent power-hitting coach, will join Bangladesh in August. This move within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) comes ahead of the Asia Cup, which will be held in September later this year. Wood is slated to join the setup for three weeks to increase the team’s batters’ range of shots.
Bangladeshi cricketers will begin their preparation camp for the eight-team competition on August 6 at Dhaka’s Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The 20-over event, which begins on September 9 in the UAE, will serve as a dress rehearsal for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026. Wood’s future beyond the Asia Cup is now uncertain.
“Yes, I’m speaking with Simmo (Phil Simmons, head coach). Basically, I’ll be there for three weeks in August. That is what I have heard, but it has not been confirmed yet. But it’s very likely. You definitely spoke with the BCB. Yes, I will be in Dhaka in August, just before the Asia Cup. “I’m not sure (after the Asia Cup) because it depends on them (BCB),” Wood said.
My job will be to give the team information: Julian Wood
Wood, who has worked in the country before during his stint with Chattogram Challengers in the Bangladesh Premier League, spoke on his intentions with the new role with the national team and the challenges that come along.
“I think the key for me is there’s a lot of talent there. They’ve always had talent. When it comes to white-ball cricket, striking the ball is obviously a major part of the game now. It (my job) will be to give them information and the key thing is how to use their power, how to generate their power, and use that power more efficiently,” added Wood.
Wood, who has played an instrumental part in transforming England’s white-ball setup previously, is understood to be not the only one to be drafted into the Bangladeshi system. David Scott, who has worked with the High Performance Unit of the team, is also reported filling in the role as a sport psychologist.
