The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released the India A squad for the three-match One-Day International series against Australia A, as well as the Rest of India (ROI) squad for the Irani Cup. India A will play their matches in Kanpur beginning September 30, while the Irani Cup will be held in Nagpur beginning October 1 against the Ranji Trophy champions 2024-25.
Shreyas Iyer will skipper India A in the three-match One-Day series. Rajat Patidar was formerly named as the One-Day captain, but he has been promoted to lead the ROI side after demonstrating great leadership in the Duleep Trophy final for Central Zone against South Zone, when he won the silverware.
Tilak Verma will be Iyer’s deputy in One-Day matches, and Ruturaj Gaikwad will be ROI’s deputy in the Iran Cup. Iyer sought a sabbatical from red-ball cricket and missed the second unofficial Test against Australia A, but he will now lead the squad in white-ball cricket.
The BCCI also verified Iyer’s decision to take a six-month vacation from red ball cricket.
Iyer recently had back surgery in the UK and recovered successfully. However, he suffered from frequent back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format. He plans to use this time to increase his endurance, strengthen his body, and improve his fitness. As a result, Iyer was not considered for selection in the Irani Cup.
