“Whatever profession you pursue, try to give it your best shot,” was the best advice Agni Chopra received as a teenager from his father, renowned producer-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
Leaving Mumbai and stepping outside of his comfort zone to play first-class cricket for a state in the Northeast where the sport is still relatively new wasn’t an easy choice.
However, Agni found his calling in Mizoram cricket, and the 26-year-old has had a wonderful cricketing experience since receiving
The BCCI award for “Top Run Getter in Ranji Trophy Plate League” from Indian captain and childhood hero Rohit Sharma.
He demonstrated his ravenous thirst for large scores and the consistency needed to succeed at the first class level with a total of 939 runs at an incredible average of almost 80 in the 2023–24 season.
It was a child’s dream to be able to join the whose who of Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Sarfaraz Khan, and Smriti Mandhana, in that special photo, with his mother, renowned film critic Anupama Chopra, and father, Vinod, cheering him on from the audience.
“It meant a lot to receive this award from Rohit Sharma bhai, who is also from Mumbai and whom I have idolised for many years,” Agni remarked following the ceremony.
“I’ve spent nearly half of my life watching Rohit bhai play, so getting it from the Indian captain seems like a complete circle moment. My parents have always encouraged me and helped me through tough times while I was in and out of the Mumbai team, so having them support me was an amazing feeling,” he said.
“It is indeed great to see my hard work receive some recognition and it is incredibly special to receive an award for Ranji Trophy which is one of the most storied tournaments and I am grateful to receive this award,” he said.
With his performances, Agni has attempted to elevate Mizoram into the Elite group, which is undoubtedly the ultimate objective for which all players in white are dressed. to don the India Test cap in navy blue.
He is anxious to push further limits now that he has stepped outside of his comfort zone.
