Some captains were penalized by missing a game last season due to slow over-rate offenses. Prior to the event, the BCCI changed the rules of play.
It was also announced that the captain would not be immediately banned for this offense in the future.
This regulation caused Rishabh Pant to miss a recent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Hardik Pandya also had to deal with the consequences of his offense from the previous season, which will prevent him from playing in the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) opening match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). As it turns out, the recently updated regulations are comparable to the ICC’s system, which penalizes captains for their offenses with demerit points rather than outright banning them from games. The captain will not be pardoned, though, as this regulation may affect their match pay. However, the captain could still receive a penalty for the additional demerit points.
The Level 1 infraction will result in 25 to 75 percent match fees with demerit points, which will be assessed over the following three years. The captain will receive demerit points but not a match penalty for the slow over-rate. According to an internal statement cited by, a Level 2 offense will result in four demerit points if it is determined to be very significant.
“The match referee may administer a punishment, which could be a 100% fine or more demerit points, for each four demerit points accrued. According to a source from the Know, slow overrate won’t result in a match ban (right away), but these demerit points could eventually lead to one.
Speaking of the Hardik Pandya sluggish over-rate offense, it happened during a 2024 season game between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG). Pandya was fined 30 lakh and suspended for one game because it was his third offense. In the first match, which will take place at the Chepauk, MI will be led by star batsman Suryakumar Yadav.
