On Sunday, January 12, the Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will take place in Mumbai. The current chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) is Jay Shah, a former secretary of the BCCI. During the SGM, the state units of the BCCI will congratulate Shah, who was elected without opposition in August 2023 and became the youngest head of the ICC.
Greg Barclay, who chose to resign voluntarily and did not run for a third term, was replaced by Shah. Notably, Shah has been the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021 and has served as the secretary of the BCCI since October 2019.
He is being congratulated, but since he no longer has a job with the BCCI, he will not be a part of SGM.
Shah has been outspoken about his goal of making cricket more widely played, particularly in nations where it is not as popular. In order to discuss the inclusion of the sport in the forthcoming Summer Games, he recently met with high-ranking officials from the organising committee for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
It is important to note that, in 2028, cricket will return to the Olympics in Los Angeles, following a 128-year absence. The game’s inclusion in the 2032 edition in Brisbane has not yet been guaranteed. Within its jurisdiction, the game will experience certain alterations outside of the Olympics. Introducing a two-tier system for the World Test Championship cycle will be the first of them.
In the past, the ten nations that were notified as Test-playing nations competed in the two-year WTC cycle. The countries will be divided into two groups under the new two-tier system, with the major teams making up tier 1 and the remaining teams in tier 2. Additionally, cricketing nations like the West Indies have been very critical of this.
