Ben McDermott, a batter from Queensland, has been called up to the Australian ODI team for Tuesday’s third match against the West Indies in Canberra. After top hitter Matthew Short was forced to miss the third One-Day International due to a hamstring injury, the 29-year-old was added to the team.
After hitting for 41 runs in the second ODI of the series at the SCG, Short was hurt while batting and was unable to field in the second half of the game. It’s also interesting to remember that Ben McDermott scored his lone ODI century during Australia’s 2022 tour of Pakistan, the last time he played an ODI.
Travis Head was rested, so the Men in Yellow are down to just Ben McDermott as a last-ditch option among the hitters.
Ben McDermott recently scored an incredible 146 runs for Queensland against Tasmania in a Sheffield Shield match. The top batsman will want to replicate that performance in the third ODI against the West Indies.
Australia will also be without Josh Hazlewood’s services.
Additionally, Josh Hazlewood, the premier pacer for the Australian team, is scheduled to stay in Sydney prior to joining the T20I squad for the forthcoming matches against the Windies; therefore, he will not be available for the third ODI against the West Indies.
Some stars have been left out, but players like Spencer Johnson have been called up to the T20I squad, and Xavier Bartlett is set to play again for the national team following his outstanding debut in the current series. Australia will try to put on a similar show and completely destroy the visitors after winning the first two games to secure the ODI series.
