On Monday, March 3, at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, Gujarat Giants Women defeated UP Warriorz Women by an 81-run margin in Match 15 of the Women’s Premier League 2025. The crushing loss caused the hosts to drop to the bottom of the standings.
Dayalan Hemalatha’s poor performance in the 2025 WPL continued when she gave the home team immediate success by nicking one behind on the last delivery of the opening over. In the powerplay, Gujarat’s innings only produced 40 runs. Beth Mooney and Harleen Deol (45 off 32) steered the ship to a comparatively more comfortable position in the six overs that followed that stage. In the thirteenth over, Harleen was removed, giving UP a much-needed breakthrough.
With captain Ashleigh Gardner at the other end, Beth Mooney sped to 85 by the end of the 16th over.
Gardner left after Kranti Goud’s last over, despite the fact that it was costly. On the 18th, Deandra Dottin’s useful appearance came to an end. Because the wicketkeeper-batter only faced four deliveries in the last two overs of Gujarat’s innings, Mooney was left stranded at 96 undefeated. In the end, Sophie Ecclestone had a two-fer.
With the dismissals of Kiran Navgire and WPL rookie Georgia Voll in the opening over, the second innings got off to a horrible start for UP. Another couple of wickets fell during the phase, significantly undermining their powerplay. On the last delivery of the tenth over, opening batsman Grace Harris, who had been observing the mayhem from the opposite end, was dismissed. In the middle, Harris was replaced by Chinelle Henry, who turned out to be UP’s most economical bowler.
Henry scored nearly half of Meghna Singh’s stunning 14-ball 28-run hit in her 13th over of the innings, which was 17 runs. Kashvee Gautam took the eighth and ninth wickets of UP’s innings in a double-wicket over. Tanuja Kanwar sealed the victory for Gujarat by dismissing Ecclestone in the following over.
Only twice in 15 games this season has the team batting first successfully defended the objective, as evidenced by the overwhelming victory. The 81-run loss ranked second among the largest run-based loss margins in WPL history.
