Indian captain Shubman Gill acknowledged his joy with India’s triumph, saying that individual exploits are nothing without a team success, after the visitors thrashed England by 336 runs to claim their maiden win at Edgbaston.
The 25-year-old stated that while scoring runs is vital, the true satisfaction comes from the team’s victory. Gill scored 430 runs in both innings and described his performance as “special” because it was his first win as Test captain and occurred in a stadium where India had never won before.
“I’m overjoyed we won the match. It doesn’t matter how many runs you score; if the team loses, you don’t feel accomplished. It’s my first win as a Test captain, and we did it on a field where India had never won before, making it even more memorable. Motivation is always present, whether you win or lose. We did not worry after losing the first test.
“We’ve come back from 0-1 before,” Shubman Gill stated on JioHotstar’s Match Centre Live.
The right-handed batter stated that they were confident that routinely posting scores between 400 and 450 would give their bowlers something to work with. He admitted that, despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, India’s bowling depth was clear, and the pacers demonstrated why they are among the best in the country.
“We knew if we consistently posted 400–450 runs, our bowlers would bring us back into the match. There were questions — could we take 20 wickets, could we score big runs? But we knew we were close in the last match too. Had we held on to half the chances, the result could have been different. I’m especially proud of our pacers. When your fast bowlers take 16–17 wickets, it makes the job much easier for the captain. Bumrah didn’t play this match, but India has depth. The bowlers showed they’re among the best in the country and can take 20 wickets in any conditions,” he concluded.
