Sean Williams has been picked to Zimbabwe’s 16-man T20I squad for the three-match series against Sri Lanka. The veteran campaigner last played a T20I in May 2024. The series is planned to begin on Wednesday, September 3.
Williams led the ODI squad in the just completed two-match series in lieu of Craig Ervine. Ervine has a Grade II strain in his left calf and a chronic, reoccurring Grade I strain in his right calf. In the first and second ODIs, he scored 57 and 20 runs, with bowling stats of 1/26 and 0/35.
Brendan Taylor has also been added to the Sikandar Raza-led unit.
Brendan Taylor just returned to international cricket after nearly four years in the Test and ODI forms. There are four prominent absentees from the tri-series against New Zealand and South Africa: Newman Nyamhuri, Wessly Madhevere, Vincent Masekesa, and Tafadzwa Tsiga.
The next three-match series will be essential for Zimbabwe as it prepares for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier. Only two teams from Africa Qualifier will advance to the T20 World Cup next year.
The Chevrons lost a hard-fought 50-over series, losing first ODIs by seven runs and the second by five wickets. Despite a number of players performing well, the hosts fell short in both matches.
The one-day leg was played at the Harare Sports Club in Harare and the T20Is will be played at the same venue. Sri Lanka will head over to the upcoming Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates following the conclusion of the ongoing series.
