Mohsin Naqvi’s abrupt appointment to the position of chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has shocked the cricket community. particularly considering that he serves as Punjab’s acting Chief Minister, a significant role. While Anwar ul Haq Kakar, the acting prime minister, has praised Naqvi’s administrative skills and governance talents, the political climate surrounding the current election raises concerns about his stability and continuity within the PCB.
Political appointees have traditionally held the position of PCB chairman. A difficult agreement between two powerful parties, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), enabled Naqvi’s selection as well. He was appointed because Anwar ul Haq Kakar, the acting prime minister, supported him for the position.
But things have changed since the last election. The PCB is in a risky situation as Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independent candidates are dominating in the National Assembly.
Because of general elections, political involvement causes tension over PCB’s hierarchy.
As things are, PTI-backed Independents have significant influence over the PCB chairman’s election, even in the unlikely event that they do not form the government. However, another problem is expected to arise if the PPP and PML-N establish a coalition government. The primary concern still stands: can they collaborate while staying true to their initial pledge not to meddle in PCB matters? particularly when things become more difficult for the national squad. If they fail to honor their prior agreement, Naqvi may lose his position as chairman.
Interestingly, the PCB has already seen similar scenes. Then Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif abruptly withdrew Imran Khan’s appointee, Ramiz Raja, from the chairmanship in December 2022. During that time, the PML-N and PPP nominated Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf to lead the temporary management committee.
There are still a lot of unknowns at this time. A conclusion can only be made following the ongoing election. Naqvi is anticipated to be dismissed in the event that Imran Khan’s PTI wins power, and the former cricket player will select a new chairman for the cricketing board.
