‘It wasn’t easy to take, but life carries on’—Rohit Sharma on ODI World Cup 2023 pain.

"I believed that we had exhausted all possible efforts from our end," Sharma stated.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma shared his thoughts on social media for the first time after the heartbreaking World Cup for India on Wednesday. He candidly discussed how emotionally taxing the India defeat to Australia in the ODI World Cup final was for him. After India had been performing well in the competition, the loss came as a shock to Rohit Sharma, who had to cope with the fallout.

Rohit Sharma claimed he had no idea how to get over that setback. Though it wasn’t easy to process the loss at all, his family and friends gave him steadfast support, lifting his spirits and keeping the environment bright around him.

“I was clueless on how to recover from this. I was at a loss for what to do for the first few days. My friends and family helped me stay positive and put things in perspective, which was very beneficial. Though it is difficult to process, life goes on. Life must move on for you. Honestly, though, it was difficult. Rohit stated, “It was not so easy to just move on,” in the video that his official team posted on Instagram.

Rohit Sharma has always had a particular place in his heart for the World Cup, especially the 50-over format. “I’ve watched the 50-over World Cup my entire life, and I always thought it was the best reward. We have been working for that World Cup for years; therefore, it is disheartening, don’t you think? You feel disappointed and occasionally upset if you don’t make it through it and you don’t receive what you want—what you’ve been searching for—what you were dreaming about, Rohit said.

After thinking back on the defeat, Rohit Sharma praised the team’s efforts and said that although it’s possible to play close to perfect, playing flawlessly is difficult.

“I believed that we had done all within our power. Should someone inquire, “What went wrong?” because although we did make mistakes in the 10 games we won, mistakes occur in every game you play. There can never be a flawless game. You are able to play almost flawlessly. However, a flawless game is unachievable, “Rohit Sharma said.

In spite of the setback, Rohit Sharma took satisfaction in the team’s exceptional performance during the competition.

“On the plus side, I’m quite proud of the squad as well. We performed in an absolutely amazing way. It’s not every World Cup that you get to perform like that. It would have brought people great delight and pride to see the team play, and I’m quite sure that’s how I am, at least based on how we performed until that final.”

In order to accept the result after the final, Rohit felt he had to cut ties with the cricket community.

“I made the decision that I needed to go somewhere and just get my head off of this because it was really difficult for me to bounce back and start moving on after the final. But then I saw that people were approaching me wherever I was and complimenting me on how brilliantly we performed and how hard everyone had worked. I’m sorry about them all. We all had the same desire of winning that World Cup: hoisting it.”

It made me feel great when people expressed their pride in the team. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma claims that the flood of compassion and affection he received from followers was like a salve. He did, however, also convey his profound sadness that India was unable to advance further.

“There was an overwhelming amount of support from both those who watched the World Cup from home and those who attended the stadium over our whole campaign. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped us over the past 1.5 months. However, as I continue to consider it, I find myself getting increasingly frustrated that we were unable to complete the task.

“I felt really good about the team when I saw people approaching me and expressing their pride in them,” the author writes. And I was healing right along with them. These are the kinds of things you want to hear, I thought to myself. It means a lot to us—at least it meant a lot to me—when you meet people who are sympathetic to the player and who know these kinds of things without adding to your frustration or rage.

In my case, it meant a lot because I saw pure love from the people I met instead of anger. Thus, it inspires you to return, pick up where you left off, and pursue yet another great reward, Rohit said.
