Sri Lanka Women will play India Women in the final on Sunday, May 11, after finishing second in the standings following their round-robin campaign in the current Women’s ODI Tri-Series. The South Africa Women defeated the hosts by 76 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, and the hosts will be coming off that loss.
The captain of Sri Lanka, Chamari Athapaththu, evaluated her team’s performance in the tournament’s last round-robin match.
“We bowled pretty well for the first twenty-five overs, but we suffered as a bowling unit and dropped a lot of catches in the next twenty-five overs. It was costly to us. Athapaththu said during the post-match presentation, “I hope our batters perform similarly in the final as they did in the last two games.”
In their next match against India at the same location, the batting all-rounder expressed her hope that both she and her team would play better.
Since the toss is unpredictable, we must adapt to these circumstances. Don’t exert any pressure. We must perform at our highest level. The left-hander went on, “We know India is a good team, but I want to give it my all in the final.”
After giving up 70 runs in the first innings of her 10-over quota (2/70), Athapaththu came back to hit her 18th half-century (52 off 57) in the format. The Proteas were saved in the first innings by a 112-run partnership between Annerie Dercksen (104 off 84) and Chloe Tryon (74 off 51), but her overall performance was insufficient to guarantee victory. Tryon later destroyed the home team with a five-wicket haul (5/34 in eight overs, including a hat-trick).
The third meeting between Sri Lanka and India in the tournament will take place at the Premadasa. Each team has defeated the other in a game. With 56 deliveries left, India had won the first match by nine wickets, but Sri Lanka had revenged with five balls remaining, winning by three wickets.
