Former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell believes the spotlight on whether or not Jasprit Bumrah would play in the matches should not be as intense as it is in the upcoming Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He elaborated on the team management’s obsession with and reliance on a single player.
Chappell believes that a team wins matches via collaborative effort, not individual genius.
“A word on Bumrah: the obsession with whether he plays or not is pointless. In recent times, India has won numerous Tests without him. The key is not individual brilliance, but collaborative performance. Teams succeed when everyone performs their part. Greg Chappell observed, “The formula is when the captain ensures that each player is clear, confident, and committed to the plan.”
Ensure that every man understands and adheres to the expectations: Chappell
The former Australian captain instructed Shubman Gill to step up his captaincy game in order to truly create his reputation as a Test captain in the future.
“If Gill wants to be a great Test captain, now is the time to establish his authority. Not only does he bat, but he also leads. Set the standard. Demand it from others. Pick your team. Support them. Make sure every man understands what is expected of them and hold them accountable. Because, ultimately, cricket is not about heroes. It’s about collaborations. It’s all about teamwork. And it is about captains who bring out the best in people around them,” said Chappell.
India will square off against England in the fourth Test of the ongoing five-match Test from July 23. There are reports doing the rounds in relation to Bumrah’s presence in the XI for the Old Trafford Test. All these talks come down to head coach Gautam Gambhir previously clarifying that the star pacer would only feature in three Tests in the series.
