In Match 60 of the IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League), tenth-place Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on ninth-place Rajasthan Royals (RR), setting up a matchup for the bottom of the standings. Although Chennai is listed as the hosts on paper, this match will really take place at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium due to a logistical decision based on security concerns.
CSK hasn’t participated in a tournament match in a long time. However, their last encounter with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata was an interesting experience. Before Andre Russell’s blitz helped them reach a solid total, KKR’s top order was cruising along. Due to the dismissal of both of its openers for ducks, the Kings’ chase encountered numerous difficulties.
Before the field limits were even removed, half of CSK’s team was ordered back as KKR continued to hit back despite some outstanding shots from debutant Urvil Patel. One step at a time, Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis attempted to rebuild the innings, but all of the pressure that KKR had accumulated was undone. It was easy sailing once Brevis defeated Vaibhav Arora in the eleventh over, scoring thirty runs in that one over. CSK achieved a remarkable victory in an otherwise difficult season as MS Dhoni saw the chase through in the final over.
The final game for RR was similarly exciting. They were defeated in a seesaw match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Jaipur. Nehal Wadhera and Shreyas Iyer helped Punjab tie the score after Tushar Deshpande’s powerplay goals placed PBKS down. Following their collaboration, PBKS achieved a record total thanks to Shashank Singh’s explosive fifty.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal got off to a fast start, scoring 76 runs in less than five overs. Harpreet Brar, an impact player for PBKS, shut down the hosts entirely in the middle overs, dismissing both openers. Despite his best efforts, Dhruv Jurel was unable to lead his team to victory in the final overs.
Now that both clubs are competing for pride, CSK will also want to keep RR from winning two games in a row. RR won their most recent match in Guwahati with ease. Nitish Rana was unfazed and reached his fifty in the powerplay itself, despite wickets falling all around him. The other batters’ lacklustre effort was made up for by Rana’s blitz. Jofra Archer maintained RR ahead of the game with his cheap powerplay spells.
Then, in the middle overs, Wanindu Hasaranga took important wickets, including half-centurion Ruturaj Gaikwad. CSK was forced to play catch-up after that. CSK failed despite an attempt by MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja to execute one of their signature finishes.
