Australian captain Pat Cummins did not hesitate to say that they were totally outplayed in the final innings of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s. Aiden Markram’s spectacular century and Temba Bavuma‘s fifty helped the Proteas chase down a target of 282 and win their first ICC championship in 27 years.
During the fourth innings, the pitch became more conducive to batting, and South Africa denied Australia the opportunity to seize control of the game. However, Australia’s batting once again failed to deliver. The majority of their hitters had been off of form for some time, with Australia scoring 212 and 207 in the final.
“A few things we didn’t do correctly. After a solid first-inning advantage, the team failed to bat out the opposition. SA did not give us a chance in the fourth inning.
There are concerns in the top seven, but the guys have done well over the last two years,” Pat Cummins said.
“Bowlers performed well during the first two days. We gave everything a chance; Lyon bowled exceptionally well but did not take a wicket. Aiden and Temba did not give us a chance. SA demonstrated why they are here and are deserving victors; they were in the game throughout.
Australia is now slated to play a three-match Test series in the West Indies beginning June 25.
